encouraging awareness and appreciation of the transformative
values of nourishment, cmmunity, and stewardship of the land.
In 1996, Alice Waters, friends of The Edible Schoolyard, and the students
at King Middle School, took on an acre of asphalt and began transforming it
into a living garden and ecosystem. A year later, the school's unused 1930s
cafeteria kitchen was remodeled as the kitchen classroom. To date, the Edible
Schoolyard has taught more than 2500 students how to grow and cook their own
food in a setting of daily classes in our kitchen, and one-acre organic garden.
The program is recognized as a state and national model for educators, and
offers its principles and practical knowledge to schools across the country.
